The Kentucky Symphony Orchestra (KSO) was founded in 1992 to make symphonic music attractive, accessible and affordable to residents throughout the tri-state area and the Commonwealth. Through innovative thematic programming, the KSO has become known nationally for its variety and presentation. KSO has collaborated over the years with the 2Cellos, Kentucky National Guard, the Cincinnati Zoo, Igudesman & Joo, UK Opera Theatre, Saturday Night Live, Hasbro Toys, Disney and others. KSO audiences come to expect the unexpected.
The KSO, over the years, has also launched several subsidiary groups specializing in authentic performance of various American musical genres (The Covington Devou-Doo Daddies, a 10-piece group performing swing revival; Newport Ragtime Band, a 10-piece group playing ragtime, blues and early jazz circa 1898-1933; KSO Boogie Band, a 27-piece studio orchestra with vocals performing pop, R&B, Latin, country and rock from the 1950s through today. These groups offer the KSO some flexibility with regard to cost and venue logistics over the full 70 – 80 member orchestra.
