At the heart of Grits & Soul is Anna Kline and John Looney. This duo has made music together for ten years now and continues to spread the gospel of Southern sound.
Their seamless harmonies and stirring melodies will tear your heart in two, as they perform traditional roots music or their original compositions.
The duo’s influences congregate around the redemptive strains of gospel, the drawling tremolo of rhythm and blues, and the raw twang of rural American life. Grits & Soul conjures up the pain and the pleasure of calloused hands, tilled earth, and a steel needle digging into a wax 45.
The musical connection between them is a powerful one—at once, both Southern and deeply universal—inspired by daring, unapologetic musicians and songwriters who smash stereotypes and speak to the experience of life, in turn giving voice to our questions and our longings. Together they lend their voices to the rich tradition of Southern songwriters who explore the boundaries of American roots music.
