Bio

The Louisville Leopard Percussionists (LLP) is a performing ensemble of student musicians, ages 7-17, from the Louisville Metro area. LLP provides these students with a musical experience that enriches lives and builds community. Participants come from diverse backgrounds to play jazz, classical, Latin jazz, pop, and original compositions. The children rotate playing a full range of percussion instruments.

The group has performed throughout the Louisville area, in Chicago, New York City, Kansas City, Cleveland, Atlanta, Tampa, Orlando, New Orleans, Washington, D.C., and across Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio. The Louisville Leopard Percussionists have collaborated and performed with nationally and locally acclaimed professionals, including opening for the Chick Corea Trio, performing with My Morning Jacket, Ben Sollee, and were featured at the Duke Ellington Jazz Festival. They have performed five times at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention and twice at the Jazz Education Network’s conferences. They have appeared on Ozzy & Jack's World Detour where they played Crazy Train for Ozzy Osbourne and were featured int he HBO Documentary, The Leopards Take Manhattan: The Little Band That Roared. Since 1993, LLP continues to perform and grow.

A typical LLP performance consists of approximately 65 children playing a 30-to-60-minute show. Advanced and beginner groups perform together and the Steel Leopards, a steel drum group made up of 6th-11th grade Leopard kids, can be added. Steel Leopards is also available to perform without the larger LLP ensemble. The Louisville Leopard Percussionists choose songs from their repertoire to best fit the audience and can conduct one-hour workshops prior to performances with children in attendance that can then perform with the group.
