    Bio

Karen Scates is an artist who has been working in miniature for over twenty years.  She learned woodworking from her Grandfather on their small farm in Woodburn, KY.  He instilled in her an appreciation for fine craftsmanship and a true love of the beauty of wood.  Karen is an amateur musician, a bird watcher, a nature lover and a self proclaimed “tree hugger".  This is where most of her inspiration comes from as is evidenced by her bird and butterfly pins, nature carvings and, what could be considered her specialty, 1/12th scale miniature musical instruments and instrument pins.

A long time fascination with intricate scale models has led to a career in miniatures and Karen's work is exquisitely detailed and unique.  Her musical instruments are made using many full scale instrument building techniques although some of her tools are actually surgical instruments!  Her bird and butterfly carvings look as if they may take flight at any moment and you would believe that the musical instruments she makes were actually playable. Karen is a proud member of the Kentucky Crafted program and the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen."
