    Bio

Helene Steene’s work is well recognized for its many layers of depth, intensity of colors and elegance of surface. She combines classical oil glaze techniques over marble dust, with contemporary brushed metal on wood, for a visually tactile surface.

Her use of wood panels offers great flexibility in sizes, shapes and textures to fit specific areas. She shows great sensitivity to the surroundings of an installation, and the purpose of the space. If clients desire a distinct 3-D effect, she will be happy to discuss using additional materials, such as sand, stones, travertine marble, glass and more, as the wood panels allow for great flexibility.

In 2016, "Ancient Healer," a 46 inch by 270 inch commission was installed at the University of Kentucky Hospital, and Steene's project "Ginkgo" was selected as a TOP 100 from design projects around the world by CODAworx.

Her work has been published, exhibited and is in both private and public collections in the United States, France, Greece, Spain, Great Britain and Sweden, and she has won numerous awards for her work. Her most recent mixed media work was shown in two solo museum exhibits; in 2010 at the Taubman Museum of Art in Roanoke, Va., and in 2013 at the Headley-Whitney Museum in Lexington, Ky.
