Gary Bertram is a nature lover whose mission is to capture the detail and personality of each animal that he draws or paints. For him, it's all about connecting with his subjects in order to draw or paint them realistically. He has felt the ground shake at the charge of elephants and rhinos. He has faced the piercing eyes of a crouching lion only a leap away. "Getting up close and personal is the difference between knowing your subjects and just knowing about them," he says. "Even though the risk is great, the reward is even greater when it comes to capturing those special moments on canvas." His African paintings reflect a lot of those moments. Gary has traveled to Central America, Africa and throughout the U.S. in order to gather reference photos of his subjects in their natural habitat.
