The Afrophysicists, hailing from Louisville and formerly known as Coco Yam Band, presents a lively world music travelogue of Afro-pop, Latin, Samba and Afro-beat among others. From the inspirational grooves of West Africa to the pulse of Latin clave, this ensemble covers a lot of ground with their mighty horns and strong rhythmic drive. Their songs are totally infectious, displaying incredible musicianship, while maintaining world rhythmic versatility. Derivatives of funk and soul permeate their sound as well. The Afrophysicists certainly embrace musical diversity, and audiences enjoy hearing and dancing to their vast musical travelogue!
With a combined member professional experience of over 100 years, several members have performed and studied in various countries including Senegal, Togo, Morocco, Mauritania and India. Performance highlights include the Kentucky Center, several main stage appearances at WorldFest on the Belvedere in downtown Louisville, the Kentucky Reggae Festival and the World Equestrian Games in Lexington, Ky., among many others throughout the Commonwealth. The members of the Afrophysicists enjoy learning and performing diverse musical styles from around the world and sharing the joy of these musics with audiences at community festivals, fairs and other events.
Their music is food for the soul, cooking up an original blend of world music, spiced with West African highlife and Afro-beat, topped with salsa and reggae plus a touch of funk and soul. Stir in some mighty horn lines and melodic vocals. Mix with rocking interlocking guitar parts, and serve over a complex polyrhythmic foundation of percussion, bass and drums!
