Karen O'Nan Martin, a self taught basket maker and nature lover, began weaving in 1986 as a past time while being a stay at home mom. Encouragement from family and friends led her to open Hillcrest Collectibles in 1988. She was juried into the Kentucky Crafted program in 1992 and began selling her work nationwide. After adding a greenhouse in 2006, she changed her business name to Hillcrest Baskets & Greenhouse.
At her business, she offers a variety of weaving classes, as well as a greenhouse packed full of seasonal flowers and herbs. She is a member of Kentucky Proud, Western KY agritourism and KY Farms are Fun. Her work was sold by the Smithsonian Institution at the 1996 Winter Olympics in Atlanta, GA. Her baskets have been sold in Kentucky State Parks as well as tourist areas in several states.
