Elsie Kay Harris
In my work, I look to portray an intimate connection with the earth and the landforms found there. It is not the direct interpretation or representation of the vista that I'm after, but rather an ethereal and interrelated quality of the scene that I feel when observing these landscapes. These are settings which draw me to them in such a way as to inspire an aesthetic creativity; scenes from which I sometimes gain a certain peacefulness, a serene or tranquil mood, or sometimes a certain robust energy.
The acrylic paintings are started from brief on-site pastel or graphite sketches and then reworked in the painting medium, producing a juxtaposition of color and depth of intensity not otherwise described.
