Mike McCarthy
Mike McCarthy has been carving and doing wood work since age 8. His grandfather taught him how to carve wood and his father taught him how to build furniture. He uses these two influences to produce a combined product in which furniture becomes an artistic element not just a functional one. Experimenting with other materials led Mike to add cast aluminum and bronze to his pieces. For his non commissioned work, Mike gets his ideas through working with wood on a daily basis and seeing what lies within it. He makes use of traditional carving techniques and the abstraction of various forms to create something interesting. For his commissioned work, he prefers to meet with clients and pick up on themes in their homes or lifestyles. He then personalizes the commissioned pieces so that they truly become the clients’ own.
