Welcome to the Kentucky Arts Council's Arts Education Roster

This electronic publication is designed primarily as a resource for teachers in planning for an arts enriched environment for learning in Kentucky schools. The artists listed in this directory have made application with the intent of being resident artists in schools or communities in Kentucky. The Arts Education Roster is also useful to identify artists for community projects, youth-at-risk programs, early childhood education, special education and lifelong learning programs.

Roster artists are selected by a panel of jurors consisting of art teachers, arts administrators and peer artists that have worked in Kentucky schools. The criteria for roster inclusion are based on artistic excellence and having the requisite skills and competencies to work with teachers and students in designing and implementing relevant arts programs.

While all of the roster artists are aware of the goals of the Kentucky Education Reform Act; many have received additional specialized training in the new core content for the arts and humanities curriculum through the Arts Council and the resources of the Department of Education. Additionally, many have been trained to deliver professional development to teachers through the Arts Council or the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, Washington, D.C. Those training designations are noted along with the contact information for each artist.

Kentucky Arts Council direct grant support to the education community is offered through the fall and spring Teacher Initiated Programs(TIP), as well as the Arts Build Communities (ABC) Program. Schools and communities alike are encouraged to utilize folklorists and folk artists included in the roster for any of the applicable grant programs of Kentucky Arts Council. A brief overview of these grant programs can be found in the Programs at a Glance .

Sponsoring an artist in residence can be a richly rewarding partnership for both the school and the artist. Although it requires a high level of commitment, the benefits to the students can be lifelong and endure far beyond the next round of CATS testing. The mechanics and timeline of planning a successful residency are also included in this roster.

Web resources that can be helpful to teachers in enhancing their student's education through the arts are available at Arts Links . Web sites are typically very dynamic, so the Arts Council does not assume responsibility for any URLs or information contained on these sites to be accurate or up to date.

The Arts Education Programs of the Kentucky Arts Council facilitate opportunities for lifelong learning in the arts and through the arts. Residencies place professional artists in classrooms to demonstrate their art forms and assist teachers in aligning curriculum with the new arts and humanities core content. The Arts Council also promotes partnerships between schools, businesses, civic groups, arts organizations and artists to improve arts education and expand community awareness of the importance of arts in learning.
