Although the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra (OSO) incorporated in 1967, its history dates back to 1919. The orchestra contracts with professional musicians who come from as far away as Cincinnati and Nashville.
Under the leadership of Maestro Nicholas Palmer, the orchestra performs a Masterworks series each season at the RiverPark Center. In addition, the orchestra often performs outside Owensboro. The OSO performed at Gov. Paul Patton's inauguration in 1999, and at Centre College in Danville prior to the 2000 vice-presidential debate, and has toured with LeAnn Rimes, Anne Murray, Dionne Warwick and other famous soloists.
During the 2008-2009 season, Maestro Palmer began his second decade with the OSO. He is also music director of the Lafayette (Indiana) Symphony and the Evening Under the Stars Music Festival in Massachusetts. Maestro Palmer is a favorite guest conductor in Europe, where he recently conducted the Europa Philharmonie at the Hardinsburg Castle near Berlin and toured with the Orchestra di San Remo in Italy and the Czech Radio Orchestra in the Czech Republic.
